What is Homeopathy? Homeopathy is a scientific system of healing based on a principle described by writers as early as Hippocrates which observes that a substance can often cure symptoms which are similar to symptoms which it can produce. A simple example might be a case of arthritis which is hot, red and edematous at the joints with a stinging sort of pain. These symptoms are very similar to a bee sting, and might be treated and helped by a homeopathic dose of Apis (bee venom). The doses of homeopathic remedies are so minute that there are no harmful side effects, and yet they are strong enough so that a healing stimulus is presented to the body so that it can begin a return to a healthy, normal state.
Over the past 35 years or so, homeopathy has enjoyed a resurgence and renewed popularity as people seek non toxic solutions to their health problems, but it has been an effective system of healing in Europe for more than 200 years. It is widely employed in Europe and India alongside conventional medicine. Its principles and application techniques were developed by a German medical doctor Samuel Hahnemann, in the late 18th century as he sought treatment methods for his patients without the drastic side effects of toxic medicaments used conventionally.
Homeopathic remedies work by gently stimulating the body's own healing processes. They are made from many different substances, and many of the same medicines have been safely and effectively in use for 2 centuries.
In evaluating a client, a homeopathic practitioner does not see a skin disorder separately from menstrual difficulties, and depression as something else again, all to be treated separately. The whole person is considered in searching for one remedy which will stimulate the person's own healing response and bring their system into balance.
The Homeopathic Consultation
Some clients are surprised in the initial homeopathic consultation that so many questions are asked about matters which may not seem connected to the particular complaints they have. Although the chief complaint is very important, the homeopath is seeking to have as complete a picture as possible of the whole person including his temperament, and the unique and particular characteristics of his complaints. Small symptoms which a patient may not report to a conventional physician can often be the clue to the correct homeopathic remedy for that individual.
The initial interview for a homeopathic consultation for a chronic condition usually takes about 2 hours. We go over your health history, family history, your current problems and details important to your overall patterns, including dietary likes and dislikes, your individual responses to things and events which have affected you strongly, especially those which have lead to a lessening of your health or preceded any illnesses, including griefs, shocks and significant acute illnesses.
The initial interview for acute illnesses takes between 30 to 60 minutes and we discuss mostly your current symptoms. Often, however, what appears to be an acute illness is actually a recurring condition which is actually part of a larger chronic condition. I try to briefly discover if this is true in our initial telephone conversation so that I know how much time that we will need.
What Problems Can Homeopathy Help?
Although homeopathy treats the whole person and not specific diseases, after homeopathic treatment as a person returns to balance and health, most people find that their specific complaints improve greatly or disappear. Physical, mental or emotional symptoms are a sign that a person is not as healthy and free as he could be. Often these symptoms are very troublesome or limiting to the person, but cannot be diagnosed or cured by conventional medicine. Homeopathy has been very effective in helping many clients who suffered from chronic pain, depression, asthma, skin eruptions, arthritis, recurrent ear infections in children, allergies, PMS and menopausal difficulties (to name a few), recover their health and sense of well being. Homeopaths aim to help clients reach a level of health where they are no longer dependent on medicines or other therapies.
